Vogue Turkey’s Editor-at-large, Ece Sukan wearing a vintage dress. So what is an editor-at-large, and what do they do?

Ok, so essentially, an Editor-at-large is someone who contributes content to a magazine not necessarily by assignment. They do not generally take part in or have much say on the layout, pictures or general day-to-day running of a magazine. But the freedom to follow your own interests and not have to pitch ideas to the editor-in-chief must be so much fun. Sounds like my kind of job actually!

The Sartorialist recently spoke to Ece Sukan and here is a little excerpt for you.

Current career?
I’m currently the Editor-at-Large for Vogue Turkey.

How do you creatively approach getting dressed?

Improvisation is so important! It’s not just about how I feel that day, it’s experimental, impulsive and (I think) intuitive. I have a very eclectic style, so I like to mix my feelings with colors, periods and themes. I’m not sure how people plan the night before.

What do you feel best when wearing?
Dresses! I love wearing them at any length; long, short, knee-length. A mannish elegance can be very femme too, but I am one for dresses.
Do you focus on any specific designers or time periods when collecting vintage?
I would be very happy with a retrospective of YSL in my wardrobe, and I especially love the 70s and 80s.  When I saw the exhibition 2 years ago at the Grand Palais I had this feeling that it’s all been done, there’s nothing much left to do. I also collect a lot of Art Deco Bijoux. I search everywhere but find the best vintage in New York, Miami, Paris, and London.
Always make time for…
No matter how busy I am I create time for myself to practice yoga and go to the gym. I also make sure to go to art and design fairs, there is endless inspiration and energy, Art Basel for example.

What do you always make time for? For me it is reading a story to my girls before they go to sleep, always yoga and baking for school lunches on a Sunday.

It has been a big week. I am looking forward to a relaxing weekend. I plan on making time to have a bit of a lie-in on Sunday morning.

The sun is shining, the moon is full, the beach is calling me…

Have a great weekend.

Give a frock Friday

Lovely Kate Moss and her even lovelier daughter Lila Grace, photographed by Mario Testino for the special wedding issue of Vogue featuring Kate on the cover and pictures of her big day with hubby Jamie Hince.

Kate wears Nina Ricci linen top and skirt and Lila wears a frock coat and slip dress from cool New York vintage haven Melet Mercantile.

I thought I would post a picture of a mother and daughter today because it is the last day of summer holidays here and so it’s back to school for my girls on Monday.  I am quite sad abut it too, which is to say, normally I am full of excitement to have my freedom back for 6 hours a day, 5 days a week.  But not this time. This time I am truly going to miss my girls.

I hope you have a great weekend, I’m going to spend it hanging out with my girls!

New Girl, Zooey Deschanel

Last night I started watching Zooey Deschanel in her delightful new tv show New Girl, and already I am addicted, and I think maybe a little in love!

Zooey plays instantly loveable character Jess Day, an adorable, quirky and sometimes emotional, school teacher who is just happy to be herself. After a bad breakup with her cheating boyfriend, Jess moves in with three roommates who just happen to be guys.  Obviously the guys consider Jess a little unstable in light of her breakup behaviour which involves spending her first week after moving in weeping and watching Dirty Dancing back-to-back.  But eventually the lads help Jess pull herself together and friendships blossom.

The cast of New Girl

There is excellent chemistry between the cast of characters, which as we get to know them more makes them even funnier and more endearing.  The writing is sharp, witty and the humour is dry and laugh-out-loud infectious. What’s not to love?

Zooey Deschanel as New Girl, Jess.

Jess is honest, she loves to sing to herself, her vintage retro style is delightful and I cannot wait to see more of it, oh and did I mention her hair? Her hair is so beautiful, with that thick fringe and those doe eyes of hers, I have obviously got a girl crush, right?

Yep, it’s definitely a crush.

Kisses!

These images, and the designs, take me back to my early days of exploring fashion, understanding design and getting to know the who’s who of designers.  I just love the memories.

Kisses!

Mothers and Daughters

Today I felt like brooding a little bit about a song that I have been listening to a little obsessively lately.  John Mayer’s Daughters.

Daughters

I know a girl
She puts the color inside of my world
But she’s just like a maze
Where all of the walls all continually change
And I’ve done all I can
To stand on her steps with my heart in my hands
Now I’m starting to see
Maybe it’s got nothing to do with me

Bebe Buell and daughter Liv Tyler

Fathers, be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers, be good to your daughters too

Colleen Farrington and daughter Diane Lane

Lisa Bonet and daughter Zoe Kravitz

Oh, you see that skin?
It’s the same she’s been standing in
Since the day she saw him walking away
Now she’s left
Cleaning up the mess he made

Demi Moore and daughter Rumer Willis

Lisa-Marie Presley and daughter Riley Keough

So fathers, be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers, be good to your daughters too

Goldie Hawn and daughter Kate Hudson

Susan Sarandon and daughter Eva Amurri

Boys, you can break
You’ll find out how much they can take
Boys will be strong
And boys soldier on
But boys would be gone without the warmth from
A womans good, good heart

Marcheline Bertrand and daughter Angelina Jolie

Tippi Hedren and her daughter Melanie Griffith and her daughter Dakota Johnson

On behalf of every man
Looking out for every girl
You are the god and the weight of her world

Janet Leigh and daughter Jamie Lee Curtis

Pearl Lowe and daughter Daisy Lowe

So fathers, be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers, be good to your daughters too

Jerry Hall and daughter Elizabeth Jagger

Peggy Lipton and daughter Rashida Jones

Such a great song, I love the live version from Where the Light Is.

Today is the first day of school holidays and I woke up early this morning feeling very unwell… not a good start is it?  Tummy churning, head aching and all I want to do is curl up in a ball in bed and hide… I am doing my best to entertain my girls in between bouts of nausea, this is not a good start – did I say that already?  Wish me luck.

Ciao for now,

Vogue Heaven

So finally I was able to purchase my much anticipated copy of the September Australian Vogue – their 50th anniversary edition.

Vogue Australia doesn’t arrive in NZ until the last week of the month, so to say I’ve been hanging out for it is quite the understatement!

I was not disappointed.  It is a triumph!  360 gorgeous pages and I’m not even half-way through after 2 solid hours of reading.

Vogue produced 4 spectacular covers for their special 50th anniversary edition all of which feature our divine Cate Blanchett drawn by the wonderful and very talented fashion illustrator, David Downton.

Each one is a collector’s edition.  I have many collector’s editions of Vogue Australia, most of which are in mint condition and are treasures I will never part with.  But there is something extraordinary about these covers, they are truly, truly beautiful.

So HAPPY BIRTHDAY Vogue Australia, I always have and always will, love you the most!

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Ciao for now,

I Am In Denim Heaven!

 Me so happy!

I just wanted to tell you all that I had great success today in finding not one but three pairs of jeans!  Hurrah!
Yesterday I went out with my super lovely and très stylish mother-in-law and we hit the shops to find me some jeans.  It was dreadful.  Nothing fit properly, I tried on so many pairs and they all looked terrible and nothing felt right.  I sulked all the way home feeling very disillusioned.

I was not to be defeated though and today I awoke with a new vigour and a new attitude!  I headed on down to Cuba St, I made one stop at Recycle Boutique and bam!  Three hot pairs of designer denim at less than half the price of brand new ones.  To be honest though, the bargain prices were not the drawcard.  I wouldn’t care if I had to pay a lot more for my perfect jeans, I just wanted them to feel like they were mine when I put them on.  And so I took a chance that this fantastic little vintage and recycled clothing boutique would be able to save the day and save the day it did!  I couldn’t be happier with my trois ange de denim!  Diesel, Workshop and Sass & Bide.  All three fit gloriously, all three make my derriere look perky and all three are making me so very, very happy!

So I guess the best thing to do in a fashion crises, is to just let go…
