Give a frock Friday

In keeping with my theme of Frock Friday images styled by Grace Coddington, I love this image for its romance. It captures a moment in time when life was simpler, a mother and child spending time together – it could be from a hundred years ago…  The frock and the image have a very bohemian quality to them, and it is of course, the highly romantic and naturally carefree spirit of the image which I love. It takes me on a journey, which is the job of the stylist isn’t it, to feel transported. Model Caroline Trentini is beautiful in this star and flower print chiffon frock by Valentino and photographed by Vogue regular Patrick Demarchelier for American Vogue’s November 2011 issue.

Short and sweet this week, too much to do really, on top of which I’ve just come back from a super relaxing and much needed session with my marvellous Acupuncturist – so I do not want to undo all that good work by sitting at my desk!

Have a wonderful weekend, wherever you are!

From the Mat… my first time teaching

20140125-210711.jpg

This past week I experienced teaching yoga for the first time! It was an exceptional moment in my life because I know absolutely now, that this is what I am supposed to be doing!

My big hurdle was nerves. Mercifully, for our first time teaching the sequence had to be just five minutes long but, we would all be teaching in front of our fellow students and our teachers, which is daunting for even the experienced teachers in the course – five minutes felt like an hour! I focused intensely on learning the poses and then I spent a lot of time on the words, basically this was the most frustrating part because no one tells you how hard it is to find the right words. Then I had to learn how to say them while at the same time giving instruction to breathe! Somehow I just knew it would all come together, I just had to have faith.

Every morning I practiced for as long as I could, then I would meditate, after which I would head off to my day job. In the afternoon I practiced some more, this time with yoga mats spread out on our back deck and my wonderful daughters and darling hubby as my willing crash test dummies! I am so grateful for their help, I love them so much!

I think I was as prepared as I could be, and by the time I stepped onto the mat in front of my fellow student teachers, I was still nervous but I was also very calm and also very happy – I couldn’t stop smiling! When I finished, I took my place on my mat amongst my fellow student teachers, but what I really wanted to do was click my heels together and high-five every one of them!

I have never had an experience like it! The feedback I received was amazing, very positive and I feel so happy and transformed from the whole experience, I’m looking forward to the next time already.

Have a wonderful week.

“Into the Woods” a Red Riding Hood themed editorial for American Vogue’s September 2009 issue. Expertly styled by Grace Coddington and stars Natalia Vodianova in many crimson coloured frocks but I chose this gorgeous brocade frock by Prada and photographed by the seriously talented Mert & Marcus for today. This week I got to teach at yoga for the first time and the lead up to it was… let’s just say I was very, very, focused! It was amazing and I had so much fun so I am writing more about the experience in another post because there’s so much I want to say about it I feel it deserves its own post!

This weekend we have been preparing for the girls going back to school next week. The summer holidays are over, they’ve gone by so quickly.

Have a wonderful weekend, wherever you are!

Give a frock Friday

While away on our glamping trip this week, I finally had the opportunity to engross myself in Grace Coddington: A Memoir (a book my BFF Kirsty gave my for my birthday way back in August) and so my dear friends, the consequences of my reading this marvellous memoir and trip down memory lane is that you will now be inundated with pictures from Grace’s vast catalogue of editorials for Vogue – aren’t you lucky? I love to ready biographies and I am always greatly influenced by the subjects I read about and Grace Coddington has been no exception. I am simply in total infatuation with this woman’s talent and love for clothes and fashion and her delightful self-depracating attitude. She is a woman who comes across as having always known exactly who she is and is incredibly good at self-acceptance and pragmatism. She’s been around for some time and effortlessly fell into modelling and a career at Vogue in a way that just does not happen anymore. And so we come to today’s Frock …

fendi_kate_grace_mario_vogue 2000As it was Kate’s 40th birthday on the 16th (finally!) I wanted to honour that by posting this gorgeous picture taken by Mario Testino (the master of sexy pictures in my mind) for Vogue in 2000 which of course was styled by Grace Coddington. The frock is Fendi and features stunningly detailed crystal appliqué – the perfect frock to celebrate in, yes?

I’m in deep focus this week as I prepare for my first ever teaching session at yoga. I found myself having great difficulty finding the words to poses I have practiced hundreds perhaps thousands of times, it has been incredibly eye-opening and humbling. Speaking, breathing, remembering what to say and to remind students to inhale and exhale is so much harder than it looks!

Have a wonderful weekend, wherever you are.

Before Sunrise Elle 2005 Gilles Bensimon Miranda KerrThis week’s frock is worn by Miranda Kerr, looking like Ariel the mermaid washed upon the shore or maybe she partied all night and passed out on the beach? Couldn’t possibly be the latter if it’s Miranda Kerr, right? Anyway, whatever the intention of the photographer with this image, it’s inspiration for our beachside camping trip commencing this weekend! I also get to spend an entire week with my little family. While the girls are on school summer holidays here, I have not been able to spend much time with them due to my day job, so I am making the most of the time we have together before school starts up again.

Back to the frock, this sea foam green silk satin gown by Calvin Klein Collection, photographed by frenchman, Gilles Bensimon for January 2005 American Elle editorial “Before Sunrise”. Click through the image for more.

Glamping is good!

It’s January and for my little family, that means it’s time to pack up our car with our tent, camping equipment, too much food and my over-packed bag (I am the worst packer ever) then we catch the ferry over to our favourite little beach on Straddie, which is a little island off the coast of Brisbane also known as Stradbroke island. We are heading to the north island, which until recently was experiencing a terrible bush fire but it seems as if this has been finally put out so we are going ahead with our trip after all. We will be camping with 3 other wonderful families, all seasoned campers!

My plan is to head down to the beach every morning to practice yoga, either by myself or with anyone of our group willing to join me. We were told yesterday at Yoga teacher training that we are beginning teaching next week, all of us have been given a 5 minute sequence which we will be teaching over the next month – aargh! I am excited and nervous at the prospect! I mean, it’s not like I didn’t sign up for this, but teaching already? The thing I’m most scared about is forgetting what I’m doing mid-asana. I have a terrible habit of forgetting what I’m doing when I’m nervous. I wonder if I can use palm cards?? It’s a simple warm-up sequence of cat-cow and extended leg pose with a downward dog thrown in between. Something which I know very well, but still… it’s nerve-wracking!! At the very least I take comfort in knowing that my fellow-trainees will all be feeling the same way as me, that we are all in this together.

Anyway, I’m sure the first time will be the hardest, after then it should all be smooth sailing, right? Ha!
