lanvin_caroline trentini alber elbaz_lanvin atelier annie leibovitz_sept 2004

As it’s Fashion Week in Paris, I thought I would post this picture of Lanvin creative director Alber Elbaz with Brazilian model Caroline Trentini. This picture from Vogue was shot by legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz in the Lanvin Atelier in Paris September 2004. It’s beheind the scenes images of these incredible couture houses that I love so much. The incredible talent in the fingers of the women that work there bringing to life the imaginations of the likes of Alber Elbaz – oh to have that much creativity in even my little pinky!

I like this quote taken from an interview with Alber Elbaz conducted by 90s supermodel Stephanie Seymour for Interview magazine: “You know what it is? I love and respect women. I work mostly with women. And you know, our logo for Lanvin is a mother and a daughter. I’ve always said, “It’s not a lion, and it’s not a horse. It’s a mother and a daughter.” I find the logo very emotional. We really started from scratch eight years ago at Lanvin. It’s the oldest couture house in the world, but when I came onboard, it was a great name without much in it. We slowly moved in. I love coffee, but I always say not everything has to be instant. We took the time. It took eight years to move from 15 accounts to 400 accounts. What’s important is to maintain it as a family business. It’s very much like Interview, which you don’t talk about as a group—it’s a family. The nature of fashion is family. You see that at almost every house—it was owned first by a family. It wasn’t owned by a bank. In fact, the bankers went into fashion later . . . And look what happened to fashion!” Here! Here! Alber!

So today we’re midway through the spring school holidays here and so far, so good – everyone is still alive, and with smiles on their faces! I’m feeling like rearranging furniture in the house today… which room should I start with?

Have a wonderful weekend, wherever you are!

dolce_walking carpet

Walking flokati rug at Dolce and Gabbana s/s 2014. I was being kind.

marni_ss14 milan_coral

Silly hats yes, and over the top embellishments, looks like something brought up from the bottom of the ocean floor. Gosh, did I just say that? And I happen to love Marni.

Missoni s/s 2014 perfection.

missoni_ss14_milan_fringe

Missoni s/s 2014 fringe-dweller. I would hate to get it caught on something.

missoni_ss14_milan_knit dress

More perfection from Missoni s/s 2014.

missoni_ss14_print dress

Missoni s/s 2014 I love the colours and the line and the super sensible shoes.

pucci_ss 14 milan_jumpsuit

Pucci s/s 2014 – wish list.

pucci_ss14_milan_belt

Pucci s/s 2014. Not necessarily a fan, but I wanted to show you the boxing title belts!

I love the Italian runways, they always have so much fun with fashion! Key trends I’ve spotted so far… Silly hats worn with way cool sunglasses, comfy shoes, super embellishment – how does one clean something like that? Walking carpets, boxing title belts that cinch in the waist, classic Dolce lines, maxi dresses and of course skirts, prints, prints and more prints, bright colours with black & white, mesh, fringe and ankle boots.

The 80s and 90s morphing together. What’s not to love?

Meditation to Distraction

meditation

Back in February I made the decision to dedicate a year and a half of my life to yoga teacher training. Now with just over 6 weeks to go until I begin training I’m feeling very excited and also very trepidatious because my meditation and daily yoga practice is still not up to where I would like it to be. This of course is purely me putting pressure on myself, which of course is not very yogic of me, but there you go.

Lately when I meditate my mind is like a kid in a toy store. Suddenly I’m targeting every single thought that comes to mind, it’s almost impossible to let any thoughts pass me by. I have to pick it up and examine it until I’m so far down the rabbit hole of thought that I’ve forgotten I’m supposed to be meditating! Then there’s the conscious part of my brain – let’s call it the overprotective parent part of my brain which is doing her best to reign in the little kid part of my brain, she’s trying to persuade the ADD part of me to not dwell too much on any one thought for too long, she keeps pulling me back to the meditation. Namaste to that!

And so I remain dedicated to the process because I know in my heart I am better for it every day that I do. I cope better with life, with unexpected drama, with anxiety, focus, pain, memory, perseverance, all these things become easier to handle when I stick with it. I’ve thought about a dedicated meditation space in my house, maybe out on the deck now that the weather is warming up. Apparently this is supposed to help. What do you think?

waking up is really hard

I love this quote from Zooey Deschanel because it is exactly how I feel about mornings. I’m sooooooo tired lately, I can barely focus on anything except going back to sleep until my alarm is screaming “Get up! Get up! Get up!” I found this app that wakes me up with the sound of a gentle gong. It’s pleasant enough, sure. But if I ignore it, eventually the gongs get louder and closer together…

It’s school holidays here and so it’s all play dates and constant eating (the kids – not me), finding things to do that keep us out of the heat of the day but not stuck inside all the time. Late afternoon visits to the beach are where my head is at right now.

tumblr_mh1k87Kgh61rnbekgo1_1280I need something bright to cheer me up today and this gorgeous Alexander McQueen frock worn by Daria Werbowy is just the ticket. This image is from an editorial called Trail Blazers which was shot for Vogue UK by Mario Testino in the Andes in 2008.

Have a wonderful weekend, wherever you are 🙂

Dreamy Boudoirs

Ok so I’ve been playing about on Tumblr again and it’s because it truly is an amazing place. It is a master at the art of time-suckage (to quote Lelaina Pierce in Reality Bites) because you click on a link, then you click on that link, only to be lead to another link, then another and another and before you know it you’ve fallen down the rabbit hold like Alice and well… I can’t help myself 😉

I’m totally into dream bedrooms at the moment and so here are a few of my favourites. I’d love to know what you think?

My favourite bedroom is one that has an amazing view as well as an amazing bed of course! The first image and this last one illustrate those attributes perfectly for me.

Hope your week is going well. It’s been a week of nasty tummy bugs in our house – not much fun nor very pleasant. Trying to sleep it off is not working today because the neighbour’s dog wont stop barking, argh!

Later! xo

Vogue magazine obviously adores Sienna Miller because this image is from her fifth Vogue cover editorial. The frock is by Marios Schwab and it features lots of pretty Swarovski elements. I love the way it hangs off Sienna, but, what I love more is the birds used in the shoot – which of course is a direct reference to Sienna’s role as Tippi Hedren in The Girl (2012) the HBO film based on the Donald Spoto book Spellbound by Beauty: Alfred Hitchcock and his Leading Ladies. According to the book, “The Girl” was Hitchcock’s nickname for Hedren. I am yet to see this flick, but I hear Sienna was nominated for a Golden Globe for it. Click here for more images from the editorial photographed by Ryan McGinley for Vogue UK April 2012 issue.

Speaking of girls, my beautiful girl Chloe turns 10 tomorrow. It feels like only yesterday I held her in my arms as a newborn. My darling Chloe has grown into the kindest, happiest, most sweet-natured child – I am the proudest Mama in the world!

But first we have to get through today because today is Strawbfest – the biggest day on the school calendar for my children. Annabel & Chloe’s school happens to be in the middle of strawberry fields and every year the school holds its main fundraiser ie. Strawbfest. It is a massive undertaking, so many parents volunteer tirelessly to help keep this wonderful event going each year because it raises a lot of money which goes towards such things as computer equipment and musical instruments for the school. So there we all were this morning, out there picking and packing strawberries – it’s such a gorgeous community event.

Have a wonderful weekend, wherever you are.

P.S. Happiest of birthdays for tomorrow also to my oldest and dearest friends Mand & Deb, love you! xo

Cool People #6

As it’s Fashion Week in New York, I thought this image appropriate – André Leon Talley and Bill Cunningham shot by Arthur Elgort in New York 1984.

Hope your week is going great! I’m off to yoga now – later!

Russian model, Mama and fundraiser extraordinaire, Natalia Vodianova wears cotton and silk frock and feather bolero from Givenchy by Ricardo Tisci seen here in the September 2009 UK Harper’s Bazaar, photographed by Paola Kudaki. I admire this woman, her rags to riches story is the stuff of legend, I mean it’s so Disney-esque, I’m surprised a movie hasn’t been made of her story yet – oh wait, it has – it’s called Cinderella!

Seriously though, this woman is one dedicated philanthropist, which is lovely of course, her FB page  has a photos of her and her beautiful brood doing wonderful things with her charity for children in Russia.

Have a wonderful weekend, wherever you are!

From the Yoga Mat… floating like a cloud

Something that has been happening all along, and yet I had not realised it until I came out of yoga class last night into the dark, and began to shiver from the last of the winter chill. Every time I come out of class, I feel like I am floating on a cloud.

tumblr_mpailteLur1swkwvko1_400Once outside, I slowly put my shoes back on and leisurely make my way down the winding path to my car. I don’t speak to anyone, but I notice everything – the crickets chirping, the frogs croaking, the cows in the paddock opposite mooing. I float all the way in the dark, to my car. I hop in and sit there in a daze, for an unspecified amount of time. It is not until I am back out on the road driving home that I turn on the radio and reconnect with the world, still floating on a cloud. You know that feeling after a massage when you don’t want to speak to anyone, you don’t want to look at anyone, you just want to stay as calm and relaxed and tingly as you are for as long as possible? I’m in a yoga bubble and I love it. 😉

love & light, lovely people xo
