Give a frock Friday

I am quite the fan of Hill Tribe neon and this frock from the Valentino pre spring 2014 collection has a very Hill-Tribe vibe going on don’t you think? I’ve seen everything from handbags to shoes in this delightful style lately.

Did you know that Hill Tribe is a term used for various tribes that inhabit the remote border areas of Northern Thailand, Laos and Burma. Out of the many different tribes the one I’m most familiar with is Hmong. While researching more about Hill Tribes I came across Daughters Rising which is a non-profit organisation helping to prevent sex trafficking by empowering at-risk girls through education. I was shocked to learn that the financial empowerment of mothers directly relates to their daughter’s risk of being trafficked. If you would like to find out more, visit Daughters Rising or go to their online store Rise Up Shop where you can purchase beautiful handmade artisanal jewellery and accessories and support their good work.

I’ve never written about a charity before on this blog, and as I said, I came across this one purely by chance. But, after reading about the good work that Daughters Rising is doing, well I have two daughters and I cannot imagine having to sell your own child into trafficking and so I’m inspired to learn more and help where I can.

On that note, I hope you have a wonderful weekend, wherever you are.

Get Distracted

Today is my day-off and I got to spend it with my youngest Annabel because she has a nasty head cold that won’t go away. While I am doing my best to not come down with it too, I’ve also been trying to do as little as possible today because I really need to take a break. It is not so easy for mothers to take breaks, and even when we do it is not without the guilt that is standard issue. Who knows why we feel guilty, it just comes as part of being a mother. I’m not complaining, I’ve had a lovely day with Annabel and I’ve done the bare minimum of household chores, I’ve written this blog post, finished reading “The Remains of the Day” for Book Club and am about to cook roast chicken for dinner. Not bad for a lazy day 😉

So I’ve put these images together for anyone out there who is having a bad day or has had a bad day. Whether it be because you are sick or because it’s just been a bad day. I hope these cheer you up!

Australia’s Gemma Ward photographed by the fabulous Patrick Patrick Demarchelier for Vogue Australia, December 2005. Gemma’s frock is actually two frocks – one is washed silk over another made from silk tulle. Both stunning, don’t you think?

I’m late with today’s post, I know, but I’ve been tied up doing Annabel’s hair in tight curlers because she has an exam rehearsal tomorrow morning and this is what a mama has to do for her daughter who loves to dance!

Have a wonderful weekend, wherever you are…

From the Yoga Mat… how to squeeze in some at-home practice

So far I’ve managed to maintain a meditation practice on pretty much most mornings, but as for early morning yoga? Well it has been weeks of trying to haul my ass out of bed at 6am so I could squeeze in at least 20 minutes of yoga… it just wasn’t happening. But, I think I have finally found a way to work my at-home yoga practice into my day. The solution? I gave up trying to wake up early and decided to do it when I wanted to instead. At the end of a busy day at work, I’ve been on my feet all day rushing around like a crazy lunatic (that’s generally how everyone spends their day where I work) and so all I want to do is change into something comfy and put my legs up the wall for as long as possible. The wonderful thing about this action is that of course I wound up doing more than that and now I have myself a nice at-home practice. Now that wasn’t so hard, was it? 😉

Viparita Karani is a wonderful passive stretch which you can do anytime you have a wall and a place to lay your head.  It is especially nice to do before bedtime or if you’ve been standing or sitting for long periods.

I love this frock. It’s a sexy little white dress, which I think makes a lovely change from the little black dress. This angelic frock, modeled by Jessica Stam is from Balmain and is from their Spring 2007 couture collection.

It’s been a long, very interesting week… I am grateful for my daily meditation practice for helping to keep me calm.

Have a wonderful weekend, wherever you are.

Bottega-Veneta-Spring-Summer-2013-Ad-Campaign-03I celebrated my birthday this week, and it has been one of the best birthdays ever! You know how some birthdays are just very, I don’t know, ho-hum and pedestrian? Total opposite this one. It started on Monday and has been going all week! So I decided that I would post a picture of my most favourite frock of the season and it is definitely this one from Bottega Veneta‘s Spring 2013 collection. The advertising campaign was shot by legendary photographer Peter Lindbergh and I know I’ve posted a picture of this frock before, but I found a website which had behind the scenes shots which I thought you might enjoy. This one is of Danish model Freja Beha Erichsen with Peter Lindbergh on set. Look how short he is and how tall she is! So cute. Click through the image for the source link.

5qhlhMy birthday celebrations continued today with a catch up with my bff and and will end tomorrow evening with a big family gathering. How spoilt do I feel? Pretty spoilt! I have much to do before then, I have to bake a Persian Love Cake (no I’m not making my own birthday cake, I just promised my family I’d make one for our next gathering) and lots of boring old chores which won’t get done tomorrow so I have to dash about the house like a mad-woman to get it all done before I pick the girls up from school. Can I squeeze in some yoga too perhaps?

Have a wonderful weekend, wherever you are – and happy birthday to anyone reading this and is celebrating a birthday this week too!

9624-this-dress-is-just-everythingThis week’s pretty frock is inspired by Spring being just around the corner. It’s funny because I don’t feel like Winter has quite hit us here yet. It’s not been terribly cold really, more like a very long Autumn. Who doesn’t love the Spring right? This shirtdress – is it pink or lavender or lilac? I’m not sure. The sheer fabric does lend a certain sexiness to what would otherwise be a simple button-down shirtdress. Alas, I’m sorry to tell you that this week’s frock design origin is again unknown. But, if any one does happen to know where this frock is from, please do leave a comment for me, I would be ever so grateful!

We are off to the zoo tomorrow for Annabel’s birthday party. I do love a good zoo, always so much fun don’t you think? Don’t forget to charge the camera Heidi! 😉

Have a wonderful weekend, wherever you are.
